One For the Birds

I’m not much of a bird person. Or, I never had been at least. But my mom always asks about birds.

What kind of birds do you have? What bird is that singing? Have you seen any robins yet?

I have no idea! It’s a little black and white bird! That’s what I know!

I found a “Birds of Virginia” book so decided to buy it for her for when she came to visit. So she could see what bird it was, ya know! But then I started earmarking the pages of the different birds I have seen at my feeder. (About 13 of them!)

Then I started trying to take pictures of them. Of the colorful ones anyway. My stupid phone did not like to focus on the birds with the window screen in the way!

So I took the screen out.

Then I got out the big camera

Then I got out the big lens. *sigh* Now I am taking pictures of birds!

Well I’m sure I am done now! Winter is over so they are not getting any more feeder food. Here’s is what I have captured over the last few months!

I was so surprised to see a big ol’ Blue Jay at my feeder!
Barn Swallow. The blue birds are hard to get a picture of!
Cardinals are my favorite! The male Cardinal is a vibrant red, while the female is mostly brown.

Like the Cardinals, the male House Finch is red and the female is brown.

Black-Capped Chickadee. These don’t stay still long, so they are hard to get a picture of.

The Male Dark-Eyed Junco is probably the bird I see most often. They are so fluffy that it is hard to get them in focus! The female Dark-Eyed Junco is a light brown. I have seen them as well, but not as often.
The Tufted Titmouse is another one I see all the time. They are very tiny, spastic, and very fast! Hard to get a good photo of! They also chirp more than any of the others.

The European Starling (in its winter colors), Downy Woodpecker, and Carolina Wren are all year-round birds, but I have only seen them at the feeder a few times.

The Indigo Buntings will be back with the summer, and the Robins are already starting to peck the around the yard! Spring is here! Time to swap out the feeder and start luring in the humming birds!

  1. She asked me about a bird or two here as well. 😁 Of course, I didn't have any answers for her though. 😒 Having a little more knowledge about anything could never be bad thing. And you got to play around with your camera, soI'd say it's a win win situation 😁
