Easy Ice Orbs

I decided to take advantage of our cold weather and make some fun ice orbs! I remember seeing this on Pinterest a while back, and I thought it was such a fun idea! Here’s how I did it!
I used regular store bought balloons, some food coloring, and water. That’s all you need! I mixed the food coloring in a measuring cup with a little water. I only had the gel coloring, so I used warm water to help it dissolve.
Then I poured the colored water into a balloon. I used the same color balloon as the water I was using because I am weird like that! Ha! The balloon won’t take much water so really start with a small amount. Once I had the colored water in, I wrapped the mouth of the balloon around the faucet and turned on the cold water. Water under pressure will expand the balloon. Free-flowing water will not. Make sure to support the bottom of the balloon, and hold onto the mouth of the balloon around the faucet! Add water fairly slowly! If the balloon pulls off the faucet, or bursts, you will have a big colored water mess! And water colored with food coloring likes to dye things! So be careful!
Here I’ve got all my balloons filled!
And I took them outside to sit on the porch…
…to stay overnight.
Be sure not to put them side-by-side or on top of each other. They need to be surround with cold air to freeze well. 🙂
Here they are in the morning! Completely frozen!
The balloons came off super easy! This one I just had to pinch with my fingers and it broke. If I just moved the others along the wood the bottom of the balloon gave way and it just peeled off from there!
Here’s the result! An beautiful ice orb!

Two of them froze on the outside only! They had these holes and were filled with water (that poured out all over me when I picked it up!) I think it might have something to do with the temperature of water I used. I started off mixing the food coloring in just cold water, but noticed it did not dissolve right, so switched to warm. Maybe this was one of the cold water only orbs and caused it to freeze this way?

Because this was the other one….no colored water and only cold water added. Guess it could be something else….like maybe they were too close together overnight or in a warmer spot on the deck or something. Either way, they are pretty interesting!

Hmmm…. I think this one could be used for anatomy classes!

Can you see my reflection?

Ha ha ha!

I think this orange one looks like an agate!

I love how they turned out! So fun! Just remember that these have food coloring and will melt, so place them in a location that you would not mind being dyed for a while. I had them on the railing to get photos, but moved them to the ground after. I think they would be so pretty on top of some snow, lining a sidewalk! (If only we had snow!) 🙂

  1. Those are pretty cool! When I worked at the daycare and it was super cold, we would do. something similar with bubbles. Add food coloring to the bottle and when you would blow the bubbles, they would freeze. Lots of cool cold weather ideas to do. 🙂
