Savannah on the 4th for our 5th (2009)

(This blog is a repost from an old Travel Blog)

This year marked the fifth anniversary of our marriage, and since Jeremy was stuck in Georgia, I decided to take a trip down there to see him. We decided that Savannah would be a better place to spend the weekend than Brunswick, so after I flew into Brunswick we made the hour drive up to Savannah. We decided on our first night there to go do a ghost tour. For those who don’t know, Savannah has been dubbed “America’s Most Haunted City”, so naturally there are several ghost tours to choose from. We started off with one called Ghosts & Gravestones. It was a trolly tour that made a few stops and told you all the stories. This tour also visited the Sorrel-Weed house which is said to be the most haunted house in Savannah. It was a good enough tour…not very scary, but pretty interesting. This tour only brought us into the main house of Sorrel-Weed…it was a little spooky, but the carriage house was were all the action was documented. We’ll get to that later. I took a bunch of pictures, but nothing really showed up…I’ll still post a few just so you can see the house. Keep in mind I have 150+ pictures from this trip, but I won’t put all of them on this site.

The next day we opted to do a trolley tour. We really wanted to see downtown Savannah, but it’s a lot to walk. So with the trolley, we could get on and off whenever we wanted…all day long. So basically we just used it for a ride to get from one attraction to another. They were kind enough to give us 2 days use for the price of one, so we used the trolley the next day also. We saw a lot of the downtown…walked through the squares. and awed at the amazing houses. It’s so beautiful there! The giant Live Oaks add a bit of romance and mystery with the Spanish Moss hanging from the branches. The streets are lined with enormous houses, most more than a century old. It was incredible! We toured one such house…the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace (She was the founder of the Girl Scouts). It was a beautiful house, but they didn’t allow pictures of the inside. We were going to do a boat cruise that day as well, but decided against it since it didn’t show much of the city. Then next morning we went out to Tybee Island and played on the beach before heading back to Savannah’s downtown. Tybee was VERY crowded! We got there pretty early so we did get to see the beach and lighthouse, but after being there for about 2 hours the traffic started piling in, so we decided to head back to the mainland. Back in Savannah, we walked Forsyth Park and River Street before calling it a day and heading to the air conditioning. The humidity wasn’t unbearable, but it was really annoying! My hair and makeup sessions were useless! You just sweated everything off! We were planning to go back to River street in the evening for the fireworks show, but it was already crowded and crazy just at 5 pm…we decided it wasn’t worth the hassle. We had another ghost tour that night anyway. This one was called the Ghost Hunters TAPS tour…and took us inside the Carriage House of the Sorrel-Weed House. This tour was named for the TV show Ghost Hunters TAPS on the SciFi channel. They did their first Halloween Special on the Carriage house because of all the paranormal activity they captured while they were there. This tour took us to the sites where the Ghost Hunters investigators centered their research and where they captured their findings. We also got to hear the recording of the woman’s voice that they captured on their night in the house. It was pretty spooky…and I got a few questionable pictures from the tour. Look for yourself and see what you think.

On my last day in Georgia Jeremy took me to FLETC to see where he’s been living for the past 5 months. We went out to St. Simmons Island to the pier. We watched a man catch fish with just a net…no bait! He’d just threw this big net into the water and pulled it up full of fish…crazy! I saw some dolphins off the pier…tried to get a picture but those little devils are hard to capture! I got one where you can see a fin anyway. And of course the turtle aquarium…I took that picture for my sister Kelly…they are all Red-eared Sliders. Kelly has one, Fiona, who is about the size of a salad plate now. My, how they grow! Ha ha!

Make sure you check out the picture captions…I’ll go into some detail about the pictures. 🙂
