Do You Believe in Ghosts?

Sometimes it’s so nice to have dogs so you have someone to blame for every little creak and moan. And someone to go to the bathroom with you when you are scared! But what about the times you can’t blame them? Do you believe the dead walk among us?

Cemetery in Savannah Georgia. I added the friend.

It seems like this time of year stirs something up. Maybe it’s everywhere, or maybe just in my life, but I always feel a bit more spooked! Last night I had dreams of hauntings and ghosts. Oddly enough though, I wasn’t scared (as I would normally be). I had a semi-conscious dream of seeing a woman (who I didn’t know) in a flowing gown float away from the foot of our bed and out our window. I assume it was a dream because before that I was dreaming of being in a haunted house. (not my house…more like a movie house that I was trying to get out of)

I have had “encounters” all of my life. Nothing concrete that would make be say for certain that ghosts exist, but definitely enough strangeness to make me wonder. Lately I have been seeing a lot of “corner of your eye” stuff. It is said that when you see something out of the corner of your eye, that is really a ghost. I have been seeing odd things though…like crows or something that flies or runs off. Not human forms like I usually do. So I thought it was a symptom of my TTP….neurological changes. Sometimes people have strokes or hallucinations related to TTP, so I have been blaming it on that. But maybe it’s not?

Back to the dogs…yesterday I went down to the basement and heard the door to the main floor creaking. Naturally I assumed one of the dogs bumped into the door and caused it to move.

You know those little door stoppers that protect walls…they are on springs and go “boing-ng-ng” when you pull them back and release them? Well I hear that boing a lot. A Lot! I always assume it is one of the dogs playing with it. Like maybe Bonnie sat up against it and when she jumped up it did the boing. Sounds logical, right?

Well what about when you can’t blame them? This morning I was coming down the stairs in the dark, as I do every morning. I got to the center landing where the stairs switchback and took the first step on the next part. I felt a nudge on my upper thigh and thought Hoya had ran into me coming down behind me. Only I looked down and he was ahead of me, almost to the bottom of the stairs. Now, there is no way that Bonnie or Clyde would have been able to hit me that high up! So….??

I’m not the only one experiencing stuff in this house either! We live next to a protected Civil War battlefield. Our community nestles up against the battlefield property. So it is likely that the troops passed over our land, and maybe even set up camp in this area. Last winter, J was out shoveling snow and had his ear buds in listening to music. He said he thought he heard me yelling at him so he stopped, took out his ear buds and turned toward the house expecting to see me standing at the garage, but I wasn’t there. So he put his ear buds back in and continued shoveling. Then he said he heard distinctive marching orders and commands. He removed his earbuds again and it was quiet. He rewound his song to see if it was in the song and it wasn’t. It never happened again.

I tend to hear things when there is white noise going on too…like in the shower. I will hear what sounds like a hushed conversation, or sometimes orchestra music. I don’t hear words ever, just hushed mumbles that stop as soon as I turn off the shower.

I never feel scared in this house though. Sometimes I feel uneasy like someone is here watching, but it’s not all the time. I don’t think our house is haunted, but more like someone comes and checks up on us every now and then. And I hate talking about it because I think talking about it opens you up to more activity. And I definitely do not want that!

What about you? Any stories that you just can’t explain? Anything that makes you feel certain that spirits roam among us? I know my sisters have plenty of stories! Share some below! And be sure to click the “notify me” box so you will know if you get a reply to your comment! 🙂

  1. I'm a strong believer that there are spirits walking among us. I'm the same as you in the sense that I feel the more I talk about it, or mention it, that it brings more activity. I could do without more activity. There are certain things that I try to blame on Shyloh. Some, I've found out, really are her.The boing of the door stopper IS her. She likes to play with them, much to my dismay, in the middle of the night! And then some situations, she's sitting right next to me, with her own fur raised. We both want to pull the covers over our eyes when we have “that” feeling. I feel like there are “good” and “bad” spirits walking among us. When I get the ones that I see out of the corner of my eye, I usually look harder in hopes to see it again. I don't get scared or alarmed. But then there are times when everything could be normal, like sitting on the couch conversing, or watching tv, or typing on a computer, and the atmosphere of the room will suddenly change. I feel like it's an evil presence. It's just unsettling. The last memorable “experience” I had was when we bought paintings from an estate sale. We bought them from the great grandchildren of the original artist of the paintings. We brought them home, hung them up in our bedroom, and everything changed from that point. Shyloh would sit outside the bedroom door and just stare in there. She would fight me when I wanted to take her in there. Literally hissing and scratching. It was an uneasy feeling in there and I would constantly hear noises coming from the bedroom. It got to the point that I would usually sleep on the couch until Scott got home from work and then I'd go in there when he went in there. We decided to get rid of the paintings. Once they were gone, the uneasy feeling was gone. The atmosphere was “normal” and Shyloh no longer hesitated about the bedroom. I fully believe that spirits are “attached” to things/places.As far as where you live, the thought I had when you very first told me it was backed up to a Civil War battlefield, was about the history that's walked thru there. As far as hearing, seeing, or feeling spirits, I would be more surprised if you lived there and never experienced anything. They are probably watching you and trying to figure out what great contraption you are using now. 😉 Maybe the noises are them trying to figure it out. It's more enlightening when you can dispel an uneasy feeling, or noise. Oh, it's just the ghost trying to work the microwave. Until the microwave works on it's own, it's kind of funny to think of it that way.I also feel like I'm being checked in on once in awhile. I get caught off guard and get that feeling that I'm being watched. Sometimes during those experiences, I'll get a sudden memory of a loved one that's passed on. Or a scent will appear in the room that wasn't there before. And sometimes just a reassuring feeling that everything is okay. 🙂

  2. I don't feel scared here so I don't think there are any malevolent spirits. Just curious ones. When I feel like I am being checked in on, I don't feel like it is anyone I might know most of the time, and I feel like whoever it is is purposely trying to NOT scare me. Like he/she is checking in to see what's going on, but trying not to be noticed. Sort of how I check on our old house via Google Earth. lol!The last time I remember having a bad feeling spirit was in our house in Layton. The guest bedroom upstairs had an uneasy feeling and I hated going in there. I was vacuuming in there one day and the door closed all the way and I panicked! I COULD NOT be in that room with the door closed! People who visited slept in there tho and had no problem. The whole house was weird…fire alarm going of in the middle of the night then stopping suddenly, doors slamming but no doors closed…but that room seemed to be where it was the most potent! I don't remember feeling much in our AZ house. Just when I was watching those Ghost shows! lol!

  3. Ha ha! I wonder if the people in your old AZ house feel like they're being watched? That being said, with one incident involving mail, maybe they should feel like they're being watched! 😉 I never felt anything there either. Aside from watching the ghost shows. Fun times! 🙂
